Pitru Paksha is the sixteen-day lunar period when we honour our pitrs — departed parents, grandparents and forebears. It is believed the ancestors draw near during these days, and that our offerings of food, water and prayer reach them directly. To perform Shraadh is to express gratitude, seek blessings, and free our lineage from pitru rina — the ancestral debt each of us carries.
The best way to unhook from all the karmic linkage is gratitude. Shraadh is one way you express gratitude to the dear departed. You are actually saying thank you, be liberated — thus it releases you, it releases them, and it helps the journey.
